Supportive and Palliative Care

Our nationally recognized, interdisciplinary supportive and palliative care teams are specifically trained to serve patients and families facing a serious illness.

Supportive and palliative care professionals help palliate (relieve) symptoms associated with serious illness, including "total pain" – the complex interaction of physical, emotional, social and spiritual pain.

In doing this, supportive and palliative care professionals support your patients and their families when there is a serious or life-limiting illness. Our teams do not treat chronic pain in the absence of life-limiting illness (for example chronic back pain).

Our comprehensive care teams vary from campus to campus but typically include:

  • Physicians
  • Advance practice nurses
  • Child life specialists (to help the children of seriously ill adults)
  • Chaplains and social workers.

Services

The Baylor Scott & White Supportive and Palliative Care Service is recognized as a pioneer and has been nationally recognized by the American Hospital Association. Several of our teams are also Joint Commission-certified. Most of the services provided are hospital-based, and some facilities also offer clinic-based services.

Although all hospice is palliative, not all palliative care is hospice. Unlike hospice, patients may continue to receive treatments intended to slow progression of the illness or even cure the illness while also working with the SPC team. If your patient does not respond to treatment designed to cure the condition or send it into remission, the SPC team will assist them, their family members and you, as their primary physician, with the transition to hospice if desired.

Working in close conjunction with other multidisciplinary teams and volunteers, we offer:
